Explore sports emotions using a newspaper or book. Role-play interviewing the person in the picture!

From newspaper sports section photos, students try to judge the feelings of participants. Student develops questions for the sports figure then role-plays an interview. Play a sports related matching word game.

Session plan: Tutor brings a photograph or book to the session that shows the “thrill of victory” or “agony of defeat” type emotion.

After discussing the subject of the photograph – what emotions is the person feeling, what questions would they like to ask them etc., make an aluminum foil microphone or something similar and have the student interview you as the subject of the photo or you can reverse roles.

Discuss the sports equipment noted in the photo. There are four books listed that can be used as adjuncts to the session, perhaps using one to read together.

Join the Berenstain Bears to learn about healthy eating and the food pyramid (MyPlate).

Students discuss favorite foods and physical activities. Students examine the food pyramid (Note: Since this session plan was developed, the USDA has replaced the Food Guide Pyramid with MyPlate.

MyPlate is online at https://www.choosemyplate.gov/) and talk about kinds of foods in each section, then compare with their diet. Pictures of food are matched to the appropriate sections.

Session plan: After reading the book together, talk about the student’s favorite foods and yours. Where do they fit in MyPlate? Are there better choices? Talk about the foods in each segment of MyPlate.

Two completed pyramids are included, as well as a blank pyramid for the student to fill in with their diet, which can be replace with MyPlate. A background discussion on getting and staying healthy is included.

Explore MyPlate and where the student’s favorite foods fit. Are there better choices?

Students identify healthy foods, use the food pyramid (Note: Since this session plan was developed, the USDA has replaced the Food Guide Pyramid with MyPlate. MyPlate is online at https://www.choosemyplate.gov/) to discuss categories and cut out pictures of various foods.

Students create a healthy menu using a variety from different food groups.

Random House Books, ©1985

Session plan: After reading the book together, discuss the types of food that the student likes to eat. Are they healthy choices – why or why not? If not, are there better choices? See if the student can identify where on MyPlate the various foods represented on the food cards or magazine pictures belong.

The student can write a few sentences about favorite foods and their relationship to the food pyramid. A background sheet is included.
