Coming Back Strong

Oasis Tutoring Returns to School Districts

Bouncing back from the trauma of the pandemic is not easy but Oasis tutors are sure making it look like it is. In September 2022, nearly every school district that previously been hesitant to allow tutoring not only asked but insisted that tutors return to service as school administrators have realized that tutors are crucial to the success of students.  Oasis Tutors are enthusiastically continuing to answer that call.  For the first time in over 2 years, a robust amount of tutors are able to sit with their students and help them develop a love of reading without a mask or a screen between them.  Not only that, but new school districts are also asking for Oasis Tutoring, seeking the program’s valuable impact for their own students.

This demand stems in part from the fact that 2022 saw the largest decrease in reading scores in 30 years across all regions of the country and most races according to the National Assessment of Education Progress.  Besides the academic issue, the pandemic caused disruptions in routines and social isolation for children which can be associate with anxiety and depression.  Educators view Oasis Tutoring is a natural solution to both of these issues as tutors not only help develop a child’s reading skills but also become a mentor and friend to them.

Reading Tutor

According to City of St. Charles School District Superintendent Jason Sefrit,

“Oasis tutors are essential to our student’s success.  We appreciate their hard work and dedication to our district and its students”.

As encouraging as it is to see tutors back in person serving students, the need for their work is still great.  A number of tutors could not return citing health reasons which means more help is always welcome and greatly appreciated.  If you would like to join the hundreds of tutors working to help students recover from the effects of the pandemic, visit https://tutoring.oasisnet.org/for-tutors/ and click on BECOME A TUTOR.

Our most recent survey showed that 98% of tutors felt that their work affected their lives in a positive way and that they felt like they were making a difference in the child’s life.  By joining Oasis Tutoring, you too can be the difference in a young student’s life.

Pandemic Pivots for Older Volunteers: Online Tutoring and Pen Pal Programs

Through funding from the RRF Foundation, Oasis is in the midst of a three-year research partnership with Washington University’s Brown School of Social Work investigating the impact of volunteerism on different groups of Oasis Intergenerational Tutors.

Published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, the article Pandemic Pivots for Older Volunteers: Online Tutoring and Pen Pal Programs, by Peter C. Sun, Nancy Morrow-Howell & Elizabeth Pawloski, explores the impact of the pandemic and our shifts to remote delivery of tutoring and mentoring. A poster presentation was shared at the Gerontology Society of America conference, about the impact for volunteers through virtual engagement during the pandemic. This study continues for one more year, with the current year YEARS of looking at the return to in-person tutoring and its affect on our volunteers. This is a first step in demonstrating the Oasis Tutoring program as an evidence-based model for intergenerational engagement.

This study also explored variations in self-perceived benefits of intergenerational tutoring and consisted of 329 older adults who tutored children in person in the 2021–2022 school year in the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program.

Due to the COVID 19-pandemic, some of the respondents had experienced a period in which volunteering was remote, virtual, or not possible. Early results indicate that targeting first-time volunteers may maximize health benefits of engagement.

Oasis Tutors as Mentors

Tutoring, Mentoring, & Relationship Building

Photo of the word The Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program is more than a tutoring program—it encompasses the components of tutoring, mentoring, and relationship building. Our Oasis volunteers serve many roles—as tutors, friends, and mentors—and they all depend on building a positive and supporting relationship with their students. The mentorship benefits both the mentor and the student.

There are many proven benefits to students in a mentoring partnership: improvement in academic performance, improvement in study habits, increase in self-esteem, development of critical thinking skills, improvement in social skills, increasing a growth mindset of meeting challenges and rising above them, and receiving customized feedback on efforts.

But the mentorship also benefits the older adult! Mentors learn about themselves, improve their interpersonal skills, develop empathy, and gain a deeper understanding of today’s youth and their unique problems. Most importantly, mentors gain a sense of accomplishment by positively impacting the life of another person- experiencing the process of helping a youth achieve his/ her potential. A mentor is often a student’s number one influence against poor choices.

Mentors are just as important to the school districts. While Oasis Tutors focus on their students, they also build relationships with the classroom teachers. Many feel they are working in partnership with the teacher in encouraging and supporting the students. Oasis tutors have been one of the first partners invited back into the school buildings post-pandemic and are often referred to as “essential” members of the school community.

Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had a real positive influence in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living- if you do well, I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing you the way. A mentor. —Denzel Washington

2021 Summer Author Series

How Oasis Tutors Spent their Summer!

Since March of 2020, the Oasis Tutoring team has focused on staying connected with our tutors and this summer was no different.  As a special thank you for their continued support, Oasis tutors were offered   a Summer Author Series of webinars that allowed them an inside glimpse into the work and processes of well-known children’s book authors.  This special professional development opportunity was well received by tutors nationwide and became one of their favorite highlights of the summer of 2021!

E.B. Lewis

E.B. Lewis, “artistrator” of over 70 books and recipient of multiple artistic awards gave tutors insight into his life as a person with dyslexia.  He also spoke about finding his inspiration from his uncle who took him to art lessons as a child. An educator himself, E.B. shared with tutors that, “Kids don’t care what you know until they know that you care.”

“E.B. Lewis was great! I like his ‘Box of Possibilities’’ idea for finding something that interests kids. I’m going to look for some of his book at the library for my granddaughters”.   -Oasis Tutor, St. Louis, Missouri

Bridget Heos, author of the popular book series, Mustache Baby explained that her series was inspired by her own children. When speaking of her background in education and social work, Bridget gave tutors insight on how important it is to read with children and have fun while doing it.

Bridget Heos
Matt de la Pena

Mexican-American author, Matt de la Pena strives to represent all students’ backgrounds in his books. Matt spoke of how he chooses illustrators carefully because it is important for students to read the words in the book but also think about what the pictures are telling them.

“I loved Mr. de la Pena’s quote– Books are vehicles to conversations!”   -Oasis Tutoring staff, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Mary Casanova and Ard Hoyt, an author and Illustrator team, were thrilled to speak to Oasis tutors about their work together on books such as One Dog Canoe and The Day Dirk Yeller Came to Town. They read their picture books and visited with our tutors about where their ideas came from when writing and their creative process.

Ard Hoyt
Mary Casanova

“What a wonderful chance to share what we do as creators of books with those dedicated front-line volunteers who work with our young readers!”   -Mary Casanova, Author

We concluded the series with the authors of a St. Louis favorite, Goodnight St. Louis.  Authors June Herman and Julie Dubray originally wrote this story for their own children and have gone on to share it with many St. Louis area students, allowing them to get a peek of these wonderful places right in their backyard.

June Herman and Julie Dubray

One of the silver linings of our time spent in a virtual setting was the opportunity to share these national authors with our tutors- something that would not have been feasible when we were in person.  As the 2021-22 school year begins, the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program looks forward to partnering with current and new school districts to help students achieve educational equity following this uniquely challenging year. Together, we hope to address the academic and emotional challenges the pandemic has presented.

Celebrating our Volunteers

There are not enough words to describe what Oasis Tutors missed out on when schools abruptly ended last March.  Oasis tutors work throughout the school year with students who are struggling with reading skills.  This work often leads to a connection and relationship that is deeply valued by both tutor and student.   Tutors see their impact on the child’s life in the big smiles and excited eyes when they come to take them to their session.  To have that suddenly end was devastating for them and their students.  But out of adversity came innovation and Oasis tutors were not willing to just step back.

girl writing

Beginning in the Summer of 2020, over 30 brave tutors learned a new way of tutoring.  Trainings were held to teach them how to use the Zoom meeting platform and Epic! Reading, an online book source to read and talk with students virtually.  Learning this new way of connecting through a screen was not easy and their perseverance spoke to their dedication to continue their important service in any way possible.  However, once they figured out that they could do it there was no stopping them, and more tutors signed up to join in the efforts.  By January, over 60 tutors had been trained and were beginning to work in school districts throughout the country.  This accomplishment and the confidence it gave them made connecting with the students easier.  One tutor said that virtual tutoring, “Gave me the opportunity to help kids maintain their reading skills in uncertain times” and another expressed, “I love talking to kids one-on-one. This program allowed me to do that safely during a pandemic, so I’m grateful.”  To see that not only were they willing but that they were enjoying the work as well was deeply touching.

Of course, Oasis Tutoring could not just stop there.  Finding a way for those tutors less confident in their technology skills became a priority.  Postal Pals was created as a way for tutors to connect through the grand art of letter writing.  Through the school, students and tutors write letters back and forth.  Students love receiving letters from the tutors as it is not something that happens every day.  So, through an almost forgotten practice came a new way of helping children build their literacy skills.

boy reading

School districts that have welcomed back tutors virtually have also applauded their work and the value it brings to the student.  Stacy Butz, a district representative in the Ladue School District, said that the Postal Pal program, “improves students’ written expression by writing letters to a volunteer Oasis tutor.  Plus, it brightens the tutors’ and students’ day when they receive a handwritten letter. This program has provided a way for our tutors to stay connected to our school community during this pandemic.”

All of these pivots coupled with the continued hard work of the tutors has proven that they are not just your everyday tutors, they are Guardians of Literacy.  Their desire to reach the students who need them now more than ever pushed them to overcome their fears and find a way.   As we move forward into a post-pandemic world, these guardians will undoubtedly continue to do what needs to be done.

Meet our AmeriCorps VISTA members!

While 2020 was memorable for many reasons—one of the highlights for the Oasis Institute was the addition of two AmeriCorps VISTAs to our staff!

AmeriCorps VISTA members build capacity in nonprofit organizations across the country to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities. Oasis was fortunate to have two amazing recent college graduates join the health and tutoring teams as VISTAs in the middle of such an extraordinary year.

Haley - AmeriCorps VISTA Member

Haley Eschbacher joined the national Oasis health team in June of 2020. Haley chose to serve with Oasis because

“I am passionate about the population Oasis’ serves. My Grandma suffers from Alzheimer’s and she’s my best friend. I enjoy working with the elderly and Oasis gave me a way to do that. I am thankful that I can be a part of the important work that Oasis is doing right now, especially during a global pandemic. We are able to help people feel less lonely while also educating them on ways in which they can live healthier lives. Serving at Oasis enables me to gain important job skills I can use in the future while also facilitating me to work with a population I am so passionate about, and for that I am truly grateful.”

Bailey McCoy is currently serving with the Oasis Tutoring team. She graduated from Missouri State University in May of 2020 in Elementary Education. Bailey originally came to Oasis as a Summer Associate, and then accepted a full-time position serving Oasis as a VISTA. Bailey shares,

“I chose to work with Oasis because I could use my knowledge in education and gain experience teaching outside of a classroom setting. I have learned many lessons and important skills. The tutors want to work with their students so badly that they would do anything to be with them. I helped develop an online training allowing the tutors to meet with their students virtually and am spending some enjoyable days practicing the tutoring process to help build their confidence on this new platform. The next step in my career is to become a classroom teacher in the St. Louis area. I love teaching elementary-aged children. They have such amazing personalities and imaginations. I hope to be able to have Oasis tutors in my classroom next year!”

Bailey - AmeriCorps VISTA Member

Both Haley and Bailey were instrumental in helping Oasis pivot our health and intergenerational tutoring programming to virtual models and continue to serve older adults during an unprecedented year.

We currently have two additional fulltime AmeriCorps VISTA positions open at the Oasis Institute offices in St. Louis—a Program Coordinator with the Oasis Connections team and Marketing/Tech Coordinator. These positions are a great fit for a recent marketing, nonprofit management, computer science, or communications college graduate interested in furthering their career in the nonprofit sector. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve full time for one-year terms. The positions are not salaried, but members receive a stipend to cover living expenses and an education award upon completion of the program. More information about the benefits of serving as an AmeriCorps member can be found here.

Growth comes from a place of being uncomfortable.

Most of us have spent our time since March staying home, staying safe and staying uncomfortable.

Oasis Intergenerational tutoring is no exception.  We are an in-school program, utilizing the magic of real books for a one on one in person tutoring program. Our primary mission is to offer older adults a meaningful volunteer opportunity to decease their social isolation. We have been successful in schools across the country for over 31 years pairing trained older adults to work with K-3 grade students that need additional support with literacy skills.

Enter COVID 19, the schools shutting down in March and the longest spring break ever!

We had to quickly figure out a way to keep our Oasis tutors active and engages in a virtual way and how we could mirror the in-person tutoring experience.

Podcast

Thankfully, we had an existing partnership last summer with the St. Louis County library to offer FREE in-person tutoring at 2 of their branches and had BIG plans to increase to 9 branches this summer.  We were able to pivot our plans and offer free virtual tutoring sessions as a pilot with our existing tutors.

And after 300 total tutoring sessions in 6 weeks—we learned a lot!

  • Kids are accustomed to learning online.
  • Intergenerational connections happened.
  • Tutors confidence in their own technical skills increased.

After this successful pilot– we are offering Oasis Tutoring to school districts in a virtual format for the 2020-21 school year.  Tutors will connect to students onscreen using a combination of a video conferencing and a reading platform.

Virtual Tutoring is not for everyone.  We also developed a low-tech Pen Pal program for tutors who do not want to utilize technology but can remain involved.

While older adult volunteer programs across the nation simply shut down after COVID-19 – we knew we had to get out of our comfort zones and pivot our tutoring program to a virtual model. Our tutors, the school districts and their students needed us more than ever. And other volunteer programs across the nation took notice. I was honored to be a guest on an episode of the second season of the Time and Talent Volunteer Management podcast to share what we learned about pivoting our program. If you have a few minutes—take a listen.

With Generations to Lead, Come on, Let’s Read!

Mary reading Dr. Seuss

Yay for Dr. Suess’s Birthday and Read Across America Day!

March 2nd is Read across America Day and the birthday of Dr. Seuss, author of over sixty books for children.  Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!  How about a little trivia to celebrate this beloved author?  A quote from a book is listed below – can you name the book?

  1. “Today you are you that is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is youer than you.”
  2. “A person’s a person, no matter how small!”
  3. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
  4. “If you never did You should. These things are fun.  And fun is good.”
  5. “It came without ribbons, it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags.”
  6. “You do not like them. So you say. Try them! Try them! And you may. Try them and you may, I say.”
  7. “You havebrains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
  8. “There are so many things you can learn about, but You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.”
  9. “The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play.”
  10. “Things are not quite as bad as you think.”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

What makes reading a book by Dr. Seuss enjoyable?  Is it the rhythm of the rhyming words?  Is it the zany characters like Sam, the Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax or the Sneetches?  Is it the places you’ll go such as Mystic Mountain Neeka-Tave, the Island of Gwark or Who-Ville?

YES to all those questions and more!

For those reading a Dr. Seuss book aloud today (or any day!) in celebration of Read Across America Day, the rhythm of the zany words combined with the inflection of your voice and expression on your face will provide joy for both you, the reader and your audience.  You might even make a sweet memory with someone special.

I have a special memory with my dad and the book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  Every Christmas season from childhood until the Christmas before he passed away, my dad and I would watch the animated version of the book on television.  My dad’s favorite character was Max the dog and mine is Cindy-Lou Who.   One Christmas my dad gave me a copy of the book with a note.   I hold onto the sweet memory of experiencing a Dr. Seuss story with my dad and the treasure of his handwritten note in my book.

As you can probably guess, this makes How the Grinch that Stole Christmas my favorite Dr. Seuss book, closely followed by Green Eggs and Ham.

Martha Cat in the Hat Dr Suess

In honor of Dr. Seuss and in celebration of Read Across America Day, I encourage you to read your favorite book to someone special and share the Dr. Seuss book you chose in the comments below.

Now, more than ever, having someone who cares enough to show up for a child who needs them is vitally important.  Oasis tutors are doing this every day in local schools, helping to guide children who need it towards a better future for themselves.  While their tangible impact can be measured in grades and achievements, their true success lies in the excitement and confidence seen in the students that they mentor.

El tutoring a childSometimes, the simplest lesson can ignite instant change.  One tutor told the following story, “I was teaching the word “lovable” to one of my boys. After defining the word, I used the sentence, “You are a very lovable person.” He looked at me with a shy grin and said, “I have never been called that before.” I lightly hugged his shoulders and said of course he was! Afterwards, he got the most confident set to his body and smile that I have seen all year.”

These small but important moments show just how impactful Oasis tutors are in the lives of the children they mentor.  Over the course of their sessions, a mentoring relationship forms that has a profound impact on the child’s life.  This impact goes beyond academics, it can be a relationship that propels the student forward in their understanding of their true potential.

Dale_Woodard_Oasis_Tutor_and_Student

According to The National Mentoring Partnership, children who are struggling to stay on track but have a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college, 52% less likely to skip a day of school and 130% more likely to hold leadership positions later in life.  They also show increased self-confidence and self-esteem, improved behaviors and a better attitude towards school.

Oasis Tutoring uses mentoring to bridge a gap between generations that benefits both the student and the tutor and helps them to understand each other.

Simon tutoring a childTutors gain so much from the mentor/mentee relationship they form with their student as well.  The satisfaction of serving in their community along with the gratifying experience of seeing the child improve keeps tutors engaged in the world around them.  When asked about the most rewarding part of their tutoring experience, one tutor responded, “I was so delighted when I suggested to my student that we tell each other a story. I told her one and then she thought and thought about telling me one.  And then did!  It was a delightful story and I learned that my student has a creative bent.  Plus, I was delighted that she felt comfortable with me to tell me a story that she made up.”

When an Oasis tutor spends one-on-one time with a child, the results are lasting for both generations.

Marilee Fisher and her student

Marilee Fisher found her volunteering sweet spot when she discovered Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring five years ago. She’s hooked.

“Being an Oasis tutor gives you a chance to help those kids who get caught in the middle,” says Marilee. “They aren’t reading at grade level, but don’t meet the requirements to get special services provided by the school. They just need a little extra attention, and that makes all the difference.”

Even though she’s a seasoned educator herself with years of experience working with children, she is quick to point out that no classroom experience is required to be a successful Oasis tutor.

“You just need to love children,” she says.

Thirty years of intergenerational impact

Marilee is among thousands of older adults who have raised their hands to volunteer with the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program. The largest of its kind in the U.S., the program has reached more than 485,000 children since it was launched in St. Louis in 1989.

For 30 years, children across the country have improved their skills and discovered the joy of reading with support from Oasis tutors. The Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring program pairs older adults with children in grades K-3 to work one-on-one each week as their tutors, mentors and friends.

“Every day, Oasis tutors are making an impact in children’s lives, not only improving their literacy skills but also their self-esteem, class attendance and interest in reading and language arts,” says Mary Click, national director of the program. “Reading scores collected from tutored students in the 2018-2019 school year demonstrated that 98 percent showed improvement.”

Today, more than 4,000 Oasis tutors volunteer in 14 states in over 20 U.S. cities.

“We rarely find a program that has such a profound impact on two generations like Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring,” says Oasis Founder Marylen Mann. “The program is successful because the schools welcome us, our tutors feel supported, empowered and needed, and most importantly, the children benefit from one-on-one relationships with adults who care.”
